JANUARY 2015: APECS SW US has merged with other regional committees in the United States to form one national committee! (Read more about this on the US APECS blog.) This change will allow for early career polar scientists to better engage APECS resources more accessible to larger groups while easing regional responsibilities.
Feel free to get in touch with Alex if you have any questions!
ABOUT APECS SW US:
APECS SW US is a National Committee of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS). We seek to promote polar research, teach effective science communication, and take advantage of exciting professional opportunities for all our early career members!
We're based out of La Jolla, San Diego, though our members come from not just California, but also Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah! (Colorado has their own group!) Be sure to also check us out on Facebook and stay tuned to get information on how to sign up for our forums!
Still in our early stages, we're looking for students interested in joining as members or in leadership roles. Currently, our leadership is comprised of one early career researcher focusing on the Antarctic and one focusing on Arctic studies - and we'd love to expand. (At this time, leadership responsibilities include monthly meetings, which can be accessed remotely.)
Committee members are currently planning a polar science awareness event for high schoolers to be held in San Diego in the fall of 2014. If you'd like to get involved as a mentor, sponsor, or otherwise, please get in touch!
Please contact Alex Thornton at email@example.com with any questions or concerns. We'd love to hear your ideas for how to reach more people or how we can best help you!
