Now, Dr. Lynch is requesting our help to spread the word and raise money for their efforts to communicate this vital science to the world through The Penguin Counters. This documentary film, by Getzels Gordon Productions, follows Naveen's team through a season of counting penguins and highlights the ongoing impacts of global climate change as well as the importance of preserving the fragile Antarctic ecosystem. Perhaps most importantly, it empowers individual to recognize that every one of us can have a positive influence.
"We can tackle climate change in positive ways, starting with what penguins reveal as they respond to - and embrace - ongoing transformations in their surroundings."
Yet, in just 11 days, this projects has raised nearly $27,000 from crowd-sourcing via Kickstarter, a platform that allows individuals to pledge as little as $1 towards a project they care about if - and only if - the organizers reach their fundraising goal of $50,000 by 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 10, 2013; otherwise, they must start all over again. In return, supporters receive anything from penguin ringtones and a thank you to a copy of the DVD upon its release or even a 2-for-1 voucher for a suite on a cruise to the Antarctic peninsula.
So, future penguin scientists, head over to The Penguin Counters' Kickstarter page, consider pledging to support this amazing cause, and make a mental note on how crowd-funding might be able to support your own research down the line. Many of us are struggling to find financial backing for projects and we have to consider every available option as we work to protect penguins and their environment.
