Global Penguin Conservation Campaign
Pew’s global penguin conservation (GPC) campaign is designed to reverse the global decline of penguin populations through public education, advocacy and research. Since 2011, Pew has led a campaign to establish, by 2015, at least one large-scale marine reserve in the Southern Ocean, an area of the high seas that is governed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), an organization made up of 24 members, including the United States and the European Union. We are now expanding this work. Marine reserves serve many important ecosystem functions, one of which is to protect penguin foraging areas by restricting industrial fishing. Because of the importance of the Southern Ocean to the health of many penguin populations, the expanded effort to create large-scale marine reserves in the Southern Ocean will go hand-in-hand with work to conserve threatened penguin populations in other parts of the southern hemisphere.
The campaign will engage in activities to educate and mobilize the public, media and policymakers to secure precautionary, science-based protections for penguins within countries identified for nation-based conservation actions. The first country-based area of work will be focused on the creation of a marine protected area in Argentina. Scoping for other potential project sites will be completed in South Africa, Chile, Peru and New Zealand.
The Trusts is seeking to hire a senior associate, reporting to the director of the GPC, to work closely with project staff to support and assist in advocating and implementing strategies to achieve the project’s goals, while supporting the entire spectrum of activity under the project. The position is located in the Trusts’ offices in Washington, DC. The GPC is designed as a long term effort. It is expected that this position is for a term period through December 31, 2015, with the possibility of an extension pending the success of the program, funding sources and board decisions on continued support.
